Inspired by a San Francisco Classic: My Favorite Homemade Italian Deli Sandwich
Do you ever have a sandwich so good that you can’t stop thinking about it? For me, that sandwich is the “Goodfella” from Limoncello in San Francisco. After tasting it several years ago on a trip to SFO, I knew I needed to recreate my own version of this delicious sandwich that I could enjoy back home.
What makes this Italian Deli Sandwich stand out is the perfect balance of savory Italian deli meats, and fresh, vibrant ingredients all tucked into a crispy ciabatta roll. The filling features thinly sliced roast beef, salami, prosciutto, and provolone cheese, complemented by fresh mixed greens, tomato, pepperoncini, basil, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and olive oil, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Though the original construction of the sandwich doesn’t automatically include it, I opted to add a layer of olive tapenade when I first tried it, and I’ve kept that in my version for an extra burst of flavor.
While nothing quite matches the experience of enjoying a savory Italian sandwich directly from Limoncello, this homemade version is a superb alternative when you can’t travel to savor the original.
Ingredients needed to make a Classic Italian Deli Sandwich
- Ciabatta Roll: The ciabatta roll provides a crispy crust and airy interior, perfect for holding the fillings. Substitute with a baguette, focaccia, or whole-grain roll if you prefer.
- Roast Beef Deli Meat: Adds a savory and tender component to the sandwich. Opt for a lean cut like top sirloin.
- Prosciutto di Parma: This Italian ham adds a delicate, salty flavor with a hint of sweetness. Substitute with another high-quality prosciutto or a mild, thinly sliced ham.
- Salami: A key ingredient that adds a robust, spicy flavor. Use Genoa salami for a slightly milder taste or soppressata for a spicier kick.
- Provolone Cheese: Provides a creamy, tangy taste that complements the meats. Substitute with mozzarella for a milder flavor or gouda for a richer taste.
- Olive Tapenade: Adds a burst of savory, briny flavor. Make your own easy olive tapenade or opt for store-bought. Substitute with a spread of your choice like pesto or a tapenade made from sun-dried tomatoes.
- Mixed Greens: Contributes freshness and crunch. Swap with spinach, arugula, or romaine for different textures and flavors.
- Tomato: Adds juiciness and a burst of tangy flavor. I like to slice a big beefsteak or heirloom tomato, when possible. Smaller Campari tomatoes are also flavorful, but less secure when sliced and added to a sandwich like this.
- Pepperoncini Peppers: Adds a tangy, mildly spicy kick. Substitute for banana peppers, or substitute for pickled jalapeños or marinated Calabrian Chilis for an extra spicy kick!
- Basil: Provides a fresh, aromatic herbaceous flavor.
- Balsamic Vinegar: Adds a tangy and slightly sweet note. Substitute with red wine vinegar or Champagne vinegar for a different acidity.
- Olive Oil: Enhances the flavor and adds richness. Use any good quality vegetable oil or a garlic-infused olive oil for a unique twist.
- Cracked Black Pepper: Adds a bit of spice and depth. Substitute with white pepper or a dash of hot sauce for heat.
- Kosher Salt: Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt is a staple in my pantry. You can also use a nice, flaky sea salt like Maldon Sea Salt Flakes if you prefer.

Tips and Variations for Your Own Perfect Italian Deli Sandwich
This Italian Deli Sandwich is incredibly versatile and easy to adapt to your personal tastes. With a few simple swaps and additions, you can create your own perfect version of this classic deli sandwich! Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Different Types of Bread: While ciabatta is traditional, you can also use other types of bread like an Italian hero roll, baguette, focaccia, or whole-grain rolls to customize your sandwich to your liking.
- Toasting the Ciabatta Roll: Lightly toast the ciabatta roll before assembling the sandwich to give it a satisfying crunch and help prevent sogginess.
- Scooping the Ciabatta: For a less bready sandwich, consider scooping out some of the interior of the ciabatta roll to make room for more filling and reduce bulk.
- Layering for Stability: To keep ingredients from slipping, place the heavier items like meats and cheese on the bottom. This helps anchor everything and prevents lighter ingredients, such as greens and tomatoes, from falling out.
- Customizing Toppings: Personalize your sandwich with additional toppings like roasted red peppers, crisp red onions, cucumbers, avocado slices, or arugula for extra flavor and texture.
- Add a Kick of Heat: For a spicy kick, add marinated Calabrian chilis or a spread of spicy mustard.
- Mayonnaise Option: For an extra layer of richness, you can spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one or both sides of the ciabatta before adding the toppings.
- Different Cheeses and Meats: Swap provolone for other cheeses like mozzarella, gouda, or Swiss, and try different deli meats such as capicola, turkey, or ham.
- Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free ciabatta rolls if you need to avoid gluten.
Delicious Sides to Pair with this Classic Italian Deli Sandwich
This Italian Deli Sandwich is substantial enough to stand on its own as a satisfying meal, but it also pairs beautifully with a variety of sides to create an even more filling feast. Here are some of my favorite sides to complement this flavorful Italian sandwich:
- Crispy Potato Chips: A classic pairing that I almost always opt for. I love a crispy and salty kettle-cooked chip with this sandwich.
- French Fries: Golden and crispy, French fries are always a hit with this sandwich. Pair with an aioli or this Special Sauce.
- A Fresh Side Salad: A light and refreshing salad with simple mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a light vinaigrette is a healthy and delicious choice.
- Pickles or Olives: The briny taste of pickles or olives provides a nice addition to the savory meats and cheese in this olive tapenade sandwich.
- Coleslaw: A tangy coleslaw adds a cool, crisp element to your meal. Try this Horseradish Dill Slaw or this Spicy Cabbage Slaw.
- Soup: Pairing your sandwich with a bowl of minestrone or Chunky Tomato Basil Soup creates a comforting and well-rounded meal.
Can You Make This Italian Deli Sandwich in Advance?
While I think these sandwiches are best enjoyed the same day, you can prepare this Italian Deli Sandwich up to one day in advance. Here are some tips to help keep it fresh and delicious:
Wrap It Properly: Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out and to maintain its freshness. Avoid using aluminum foil unless it’s lined with parchment or wax paper.
Add Fresh Ingredients Before Serving: To prevent the bread and salad greens from becoming soggy, add the salad greens, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar just before serving.
Essential Tools for Making an Italian Deli Sandwich
- A kitchen scale (optional)
- A cutting board
- A serrated knife (to slice the bread and tomato)
- Measuring spoons (optional)
