Ingredients Needed to make a Ham, Apple, and Potato Frittata with Gruyère
- Eggs: Fluffy and protein-rich, the base of our frittata recipe.
- Ham: This breakfast favorite adds a rich, salty, and savory depth of flavor.
- Apple: The crisp sweetness of apples adds the perfect contrast to the rich savory flavors of this easy brunch dish. I prefer to use sweet Honeycrisp or tart Granny Smith apples, but you are welcome to use your favorite variety.
- Potatoes: Adding a satisfying heartiness, potatoes play a crucial role. Opt for diced gold potatoes or shredded hashbrown potatoes (fresh or frozen) – both work beautifully.
- Green Onions: Fresh and chopped, green onions bring a burst of color and mild oniony goodness.
- Gruyère Cheese: Creamy and nutty, this cheese pairs particularly well with ham, crowning our frittata with irresistible richness.
- Canola Oil or Avocado Oil: Choose a cooking oil with a high smoke point for a perfect sauté.
- Unsalted Butter or Ghee: Adding a touch of richness and enhancing the overall flavor profile.
- Chives: Fresh or dried, for a subtle onion flavor and a pop of green.
- Sage: Fresh or dried, offering earthy notes that complement the dish perfectly.
- Nutmeg: A pinch of nutmeg adds warmth and a delightful hint of nutty aroma.
- Kosher Salt: Enhancing the overall seasoning, balancing the flavors. Diamond Crystal Kosher salt is a staple in my pantry.
- Black Pepper: Cracked for a gentle kick of heat, black pepper brings the final touch to this flavorful ensemble.
Creating a Perfect Frittata: Pro Tips
Mastering a perfect frittata is easier than you think. Follow these pro tips to enhance your frittata-making prowess and create a Ham and Gruyère Frittata that is a brunch masterpiece:
- Whisk the Eggs Thoroughly: Whisk the eggs vigorously until frothy. Incorporating air into the egg mixture leads to a lighter, fluffier texture.
- Perfectly Sauté the Ingredients: Take the time to sauté the apples and potatoes until lightly golden for the best texture. Don't rush this step.
- Herb and Spice Additions: The chives, sage, nutmeg, salt, and pepper each contribute a unique flavor. Fresh herbs offer a bright punch of taste, but dried herbs work just as well if they are easier for you.
- Potato Versatility: Feel free to choose dices or shredded (hashbrowned) potatoes, depending on your preference. Because the potatoes are cooked before the other ingredients are added, both fresh or frozen potatoes both work well, so use whichever you like.
- Avoid Overbaking: Avoid overbaking the frittata. It will continue cooking from residual oven heat after being removed. Take it out when the center is just set but still a little jiggly to prevent overcooking.
- Allow Resting Time: Allow the baked frittata to rest for 5 minutes before slicing. This resting time allows the eggs to finish setting up and makes slicing easier for a fluffy, tender texture.
Customize Your Frittata
One of the great things about frittatas is how versatile they are. Don't be afraid to substitute ingredients to suit your tastes and what you have on hand. Here are some easy ways to customize this Gourmet Frittata with Ham and Gruyère recipe:
- Swap out the protein: Bacon, sausage, chorizo, pork roast, or even leftover taco meat are all great choices for a frittata.
- Switch up the veggies: Spinach, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and zucchini all work well.
- Adjust the cheese: Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gouda, goat cheese, and feta are all delicious options.
- Use different herbs: Basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, and dill all provide great flavor.
- Change the starch: Sub in sweet potatoes or butternut squash for variation.

Pairing Ideas for Your Ham, Apple, and Potato Frittata with Gruyère
- Toast or biscuits: Serve slices of crusty artisan bread or warm biscuits on the side to round out the meal.
- Fresh fruit or vegetables: Slices of citrus like orange or grapefruit add a bright, refreshing note. Berries like strawberries or raspberries also make a lovely fruit pairing. If you prefer veggies, this easy brunch frittata pairs wonderfully with crisp cucumber slices. Try pairing with this Smoked Salmon and Citrus Salad with Cucumber and Avocado or this Creamy Cucumber Radish Salad.
- Yogurt or cottage cheese: A dollop of yogurt or cottage cheese contributes protein, calcium, and a cool contrast to the hot frittata.
- Leafy green salad: A simple green salad with vinaigrette dressing helps lighten up the meal.
- Roasted vegetables: Roasted asparagus, brussels sprouts, or potatoes complement this frittata recipe nicely -- Try pairing with these Roasted Cinnamon Garlic Sweet Potatoes or these Roasted Radishes with Garlic Chive Yogurt.
- Avocado: Slices of fresh avocado provide creaminess and healthy fats.
How to Store and Reheat Leftover Frittata
Frittatas lend themselves nicely to meal prepping since they taste great days later. With proper storage in the refrigerator or freezer, leftover frittata can stay fresh and be easily reheated for quick breakfasts and meals throughout the week! Here are some tips for storing and reheating any leftover Breakfast Frittata with Ham and Apples:
Refrigerator Storage:
Let the frittata cool completely before storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should keep for up to 4 days. This Ham, Apple, and Potato Frittata with Gruyère also tastes delicious cold straight from the refrigerator if you're in a rush.
Reheating Refrigerated Frittata:
- Microwave: Reheat frittata slices on a microwave-safe plate in 30-second intervals until warmed through.
- Oven: Place frittata slices on a baking sheet in a 300 degrees Fahrenheit / 150 degrees Celcius oven for 10-15 minutes until heated through.
Freezing Frittata for Later:
Freeze individual slices of frittata in freezer bags or airtight containers for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Reheating Frozen Frittata:
- Microwave: Reheat frozen slices on 50% power until warm.
- Oven: Bake frozen slices at 325 degrees Fahrenheit / 165 degrees Celcius until fully heated through.

Description
This Ham, Apple, and Potato Frittata with Gruyère is a delightful blend of golden potatoes, savory ham, sweet apples, and fluffy, protein-rich eggs all crowned with creamy Gruyère. It's an easy, one-skillet brunch dish—ideal for the weekend and equally delightful reheated for effortless meal prep during the week.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp canola oil or avocado oil
- 1 lb diced gold potatoes or hashbrowns (frozen or fresh)
- 200 g (1 large) apple, diced (I prefer Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
- 12 oz ham, diced
- 80 g (1 cup) green onions, chopped
- 12 eggs
- 1 tbsp fresh chives, minced, or 1 tsp dried chives
- 1 ½ tsp fresh sage, minced or ½ tsp dried sage
- 1 ½ tsp kosher salt
- ¾ tsp cracked black pepper
- ⅛ tsp nutmeg
- 6 oz (1 ½ cup) Gruyere cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit / 190 degrees Celcius.
- In a large oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat melt butter and oil.
- Once hot and shimmering, add the diced potatoes and apple. Sauté until the potatoes are lightly golden. If using frozen hashbrowns instead of diced potatoes, add them to the pan first to brown properly before adding the apple—this prevents overcrowding and ensures they crisp up nicely.
- Add the diced ham and green onions to the skillet. Sauté until ham is slightly caramelized and potatoes are tender.
- In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until fluffy. Add chives, sage, kosher salt, black pepper, and nutmeg and whisk until evenly combined.
- Use a spatula to evenly distribute the potato-apple-ham mixture in the skillet, then sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese evenly over the top.
- Pour the whisked egg mixture evenly over the top.
- Transfer skillet to preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes. Frittata is done when the center is just set but still slightly jiggly. Allow frittata to rest for 5 minutes before slicing to finish setting up. Serve warm and enjoy!
