Ingredients needed to make Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke

    • Sushi-Grade Ahi Tuna: Select the freshest sushi-grade ahi tuna available. Its tender texture and delicate flavor make it perfect for this poke recipe.
    • Kimchi: For an authentic and vibrant flavor, I prefer to use Korean Baechu kimchi. This red kimchi variety is made with Napa cabbage and gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes), which lends a spicy and tangy profile to the poke. This kimchi is generally easily found at most grocery stores (just look for Spicy Napa Kimchi on the label), but you can also look for it at specialty stores or Asian markets if your local grocer doesn’t stock it.
    • Avocado: Creamy and buttery, ripe avocado chunks bring a cool and smooth balance to the bold flavors of the poke. Choose a perfectly ripe avocado for the best taste and texture.
    • Kewpie Mayonnaise: Kewpie mayonnaise is a Japanese-style mayo known for its rich and creamy texture. If you can't find it, you can easily substitute it with traditional mayonnaise. Add a small splash of rice vinegar and a pinch of sugar to replicate the slightly tangy and sweet flavor of Kewpie mayo.
    • Sriracha Hot Sauce: A staple in many spicy dishes, sriracha adds a fiery kick to the poke. Adjust the amount based on your desired spice level.
    • Tamari (or Soy Sauce): Tamari, a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce is a staple in my pantry and enhances the umami flavors of the poke. If you prefer, you can use regular soy sauce as an easy substitute.
    • Sesame Oil: With its nutty and aromatic profile, sesame oil adds depth and richness to the poke.
    • Green Onions: Fresh and vibrant, green onions (or scallions) provide a mild onion flavor and a pop of color to the dish. Chop them finely and sprinkle them on top for added freshness.
    • Sesame Seeds: These tiny seeds add a delightful crunch and a hint of nuttiness to the poke. You can use either white or black sesame seeds based on your preference or availability.

The Inspiration Behind Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke

The inspiration for this Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke recipe came from a memorable vacation I had in Kauai, Hawaii many years ago. During my time there, I had the opportunity to explore the vibrant culinary scene and sample many poke varieties. Among them, a particular Hawaiian poke dish caught my attention: a delightful combination of ahi tuna tossed with spicy mayo, kimchi, and avocado. The bold flavors and harmonious blend of ingredients became an instant favorite, and I knew I had to recreate it in my own kitchen. I hope you enjoy bringing a little bit of Hawaiian flavor to your home too with this easy-to-make poke recipe!

Tips for Choosing the Best Sushi Grade Ahi Tuna

When it comes to preparing a delectable Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke, selecting high-quality and sustainable fish is essential. Follow these tips to ensure you get the highest quality and sustainable tuna for your dish:

    1. Source your fish from reputable fishmongers or seafood markets specializing in sushi-grade fish.
    2. Look for certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or labels indicating sustainable fishing practices.
    3. Choose vibrant, deep-red flesh with a firm texture, indicating freshness. Avoid tuna that appears dull or discolored.
    4. Trust your sense of smell - fresh sushi-grade ahi tuna should have a clean, briny scent without any unpleasant fishy odors.

By following these tips, you can confidently select the best tuna for a flavorful and delightful Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke experience while supporting the sustainability of our oceans and making a positive impact on our environment.

Serving Suggestions for Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke

Enhance your Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke experience with these delightful serving suggestions. By exploring these versatile serving suggestions, you can customize your Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke to suit your preferences.

    • Embrace tradition by serving the Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke simply on a bed of steamed white or brown rice for a hearty and satisfying meal, or serve it on a bed of fresh salad greens for a vibrant and healthy salad.
    • Make a flavorful poke bowl by assembling your Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke with a combination of fresh salad greens, your choice of rice (white, brown, or cauliflower), and other toppings like sliced cucumbers, radishes, or any other preferred vegetables, strips of nori, and a sprinkle of green onions and sesame seeds. Customize this versatile poke bowl to your liking and enjoy a well-rounded and satisfying meal.
    • Serve your Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke as an impressive party appetizer by using the poke as a filling for sushi rolls or as a delicious topping for crispy tostadas.

Storage and Shelf Life of Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke

When it comes to storing and preserving your delectable 10-minute poke recipe, here are some tips to keep in mind:

    • Refrigeration: After preparing the poke, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will help maintain its freshness and prevent bacterial growth.
    • Shelf Life: Spicy Kimchi Ahi Poke is best enjoyed when consumed fresh. It is recommended to consume the poke within 24 hours of preparation to ensure optimal taste and texture.
    • Avocado: If your poke contains diced avocado, be aware that avocado tends to oxidize and brown over time. To minimize discoloration, squeeze a bit of lemon or lime juice over the avocado or store it separately and add it to the poke just before serving.
    • Kimchi: If your poke includes kimchi, remember that kimchi is a fermented product. Over time, it may continue to ferment and develop stronger flavors. If you prefer a milder taste, consume the poke within the first day.

I love poke! I love the idea of combining the kimchi and avocado with it. Living in south TX, we always have ripe avocados, and I've been known to make my own kimchi. I'll have to try it... P.S. We'd eat it year 'round for sure!

I have to admit, I've never been a fan of raw ahi tuna, unless it's super small pieces like in sushi. But this looks delicious, and I would definitely take your recommendation of making this with salmon insteadd
